You Absolutely Crush the Gym
But Your Blood Might Be Fighting You

Exercise is half the battle. “NORMAL” blood values look fine on paper — but they’re quiet red flags
that can sabotage your gains, recovery, and long-term health.

Exercise drives progress, but subclinical biomarkers can impair performance and longevity. Even values within “normal” ranges may indicate emerging risk when trending toward clinical thresholds. Click Values Below to Find Out More

HbA1c 5.6–6.4% = Pre-diabetes range (ADA criteria).

→ Values ≥5.6% signal early insulin resistance. Consequences: reduced energy, impaired fat loss, increased fatigue during training, progression to HbA1c ≥6.5% (diabetes) within 3–5 years. Solution: Reduce refined carbs, add HIIT, retest in 3 months.

TSH >4.0 mIU/L = Suboptimal thyroid function (upper reference limit ~4.0–4.5).

→ Levels ≥4.8 mIU/L predict hypothyroidism. Consequences: weight gain >5–10 lbs, delayed muscle recovery, diminished training motivation. Solution: Optimize iodine/selenium intake, consult physician for low-dose levothyroxine if confirmed.

LDL ≥130 mg/dL = Borderline high (NCEP guidelines)

→ Consequences: accelerated arterial plaque, cardiovascular risk doubles within 4 years, independent of strength gains. Solution: Increase soluble fiber (oats, psyllium), add plant sterols, consider low-dose statin if >160 mg/dL.

Testosterone <350 ng/dL (men) or declining >1% annually after age 30

→ Low-normal to suboptimal. Levels <300 ng/dL are clinically low. Consequences: sarcopenia, strength plateau, mood instability, libido loss — biological aging exceeds training gains. Solution: Optimize sleep, vitamin D, zinc; consider physician-monitored TRT if <250 ng/dL with symptoms.

ALT >40 U/L = Elevated liver enzyme (upper reference limit ~30–40 U/L).

→ Values ≥45 U/L indicate early hepatic steatosis. Consequences: progression to cirrhosis within 10 years — no exercise can reverse advanced fibrosis. Solution: Eliminate added sugars/alcohol, add milk thistle, retest in 6 weeks.

Hemoglobin >17.5 g/dL or Hematocrit >50% (men on TRT)

→ Polycythemia secondary to testosterone therapy. Consequences: increased blood viscosity, elevated stroke and clot risk (especially if Hct >54%), fatigue, headaches. Solution: Therapeutic phlebotomy (donate blood), lower TRT dose, stay hydrated, monitor every 3 months.

LDL ≥130 mg/dL = Borderline high (NCEP guidelines)

→ Erythrocytosis or early nutrient deficiency. Consequences: reduced oxygen delivery efficiency despite high counts, potential for microclots. Solution: Rule out B12/folate/iron imbalance, adjust TRT protocol, retest in 4–6 weeks.

Red Blood Cells >6.0 million/µL or RDW >14.5%

→ Polycythemia secondary to testosterone therapy. Consequences: increased blood viscosity, elevated stroke and clot risk (especially if Hct >54%), fatigue, headaches. Solution: Therapeutic phlebotomy (donate blood), lower TRT dose, stay hydrated, monitor every 3 months.

Action: Monitor values trending toward or exceeding reference limits. Early intervention preserves gym performance and longevity.
